CPA vs CA: What Actually Matters

Different exams for different regulatory worlds
CA (India) is built around Ind AS, Indian tax law (direct and indirect), auditing standards issued by ICAI, and Indian company law — it's what qualifies you to sign an audit report under Indian regulation. CPA (US) is built around US GAAP, US federal tax, and US auditing standards (or PCAOB standards for public company audits) — it's what qualifies you under US state board regulation.
Difficulty and format
Both are demanding professional exams. CA is a multi-level program (Foundation, Intermediate, Final) combined with mandatory articleship experience, typically taking several years end-to-end. CPA is a single-level, four-section computer-based exam that can realistically be completed within 12-18 months of focused study once you're eligible, though licensure (not just passing) adds an experience requirement on top.
Career signal
Indian employers and regulators recognize CA as the domestic gold standard. US-facing employers, Big 4 US practices, and MNC finance teams recognize CPA specifically for US accounting competence. Holding both signals genuine dual-market capability — which is exactly why many Indian professionals in Big 4 US tax/audit practices and GCC finance roles pursue CPA on top of an existing CA.
