What Nobody Tells Indian Students About CPA

1. State selection is a real decision, not a formality
Many first-time candidates pick a state board almost at random, then discover mid-application that their specific degree combination doesn't clear that state's requirements. Get a credential evaluation and understand your options before you pick.
2. Evaluation and application timelines can run longer than expected
Between credential evaluation, application processing, and NTS issuance, the administrative runway before you can even schedule your first exam can take weeks to a few months — plan around this rather than assuming you can start testing immediately after deciding to pursue CPA.
3. Passing ≠ licensed
This one catches people off guard. You can pass all four sections and still not be a licensed CPA — most states require a verified experience period first. If your goal is the license (not just the credential-adjacent achievement of passing), plan your experience path alongside your study plan, not after.
4. Fees change, and international testing costs more
Testing in India carries an additional per-section international administration fee on top of the standard exam fee — budget for this explicitly rather than being surprised by it at scheduling time.
5. It's genuinely hard, and that's fine
CPA pass rates reflect a demanding exam, not a broken one. Structured, topic-by-topic study with real practice — not just re-reading material — is what separates candidates who pass on their first attempt from those who don't.
